Deus Ex Human Revolution boxcover
Off topic post: I’ve been playing the computer game Deus Ex: Human Revolution on PC… well I say playing, I played the first half of the game pretty much straight through and then…the game lost me. I lost interest in the plot and could not shake the feeling that I was a rat in a maze as it felt increasingly linear and scripted.
That would have been ok (I guess) if I had felt that the script was any good. On my return to Hengsha I just… stopped playing. After a couple of weeks break I just tried again, and again… I stopped. It feels like there is nothing left to explore, nothing new to see, just more combats to fight, and frankly combat in RPGs are the weakest bit for me.
I love the sense of exploration and the potential for emergent game play. Deus Ex started to feel like I was watching a tv or movie or some other non-interactive form of media, and frankly those forms do the whole “passive viewing” thing better!
That is not to say I dislike Deus Ex: HR. There is plenty about it I really like but the scripting and awful boss fights undermine that and it does feel like the game thinks it is cleverer than it actually is.
Ah well.
